Early 16th century origins (2)
The violin was most likely invented in Northern Italy in the 1520s, although instruments were used in other countries little later.
Paintings prove that the early violin existed in 1530. In 1535-36 all the principal members of the violin family were existent.
There are several possible candidates for ‘inventors’ from Brescia, e.g. G. Giacobo dalla Corna and Z.Montichiaro, both mentioned in 1533.
A likely candidate from Cremona was Andrea Amati (1510?-1580?).
Gasparo da Salò (1540 - 1609) from Brescia can’t have been the inventor, since he was born too late.
