Failsafe
looks at aspects of our current relationship to technology. I am particularly
focusing on technology failure ; when interaction and design of a system
produces catastrophic failure.
In
this installation, the audience is presented with the immediate aftermath
of a technological disaster - a physical scene that is eerily silent until
the scene is investigated. The installation is based on a real disaster
that occured in Hungary in 1969. Five scientists were frozen 'on the spot'
by exploding tanks of CO2 or dry ice. It appears that the
technology backlashed on the makers by freezing the operators as well
as the bodies they were preserving for the future. A modern version of
the Frankenstein story.
