Abstract
Computers have become commonly connected to the Internet. Ubiquitous networking will enable powerful new types of computational systems, but software designers do not currently have good methods for building large distributed computer systems. In this thesis ecologies of distributed agents will be explored as a way of designing and understanding programs for complex networked systems. An application will be built using an ecology of agents to represent the presence and activity of people on the Internet.
