Using Lego
Robots To Explore Dynamics
by Mario
O. Bourgoin
A system for
programming LEGO robots was created for children's use in
learning how patterns can emerge in the activities of
systems of interacting elements. A group of nine 6th and
7th grade children took part in a workshop involving
programming the robots to locate, capture, and then
release a source of light. The children were observed in
their process of learning how to make patterns emerge in
the robot's activity. The children's notes and videotapes
of them both at work and reflecting on their work were
used to analyze how they accomplished it.
