My
research work focuses on information and communication technologies for
social and economic development. In particular I study the internet and
internet-enabled services - their design, impact, and importance within the
developing world. I research engineering, public policy, and business issues
as well as methods to assess and evaluate the social and economic development
outcomes.
I am interested in systems that empower, enrich, and inter-connect.
Dr. Michael L. Best is Research Scientist at the MIT Media Laboratory where he heads the eDevelopment group. His research
focuses on the role of information and communication technologies (ICT's),
primarily the internet and internet enabled services, in international
development. Michael has worked in international development and ICT policy
for the World Bank and with Harvard's Center for International Development.
He has just completed a one year assignment as a Director of Media Lab Asia, a collaboration
between the MIT Media Lab and the Government of India. Michael is co-founder
and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Information
Technologies and International Development forthcoming from the MIT
Press. He holds a Ph.D. from the MIT Media Lab.
