September 2012 99Fridays*: Elevator Speakeasy

Motivation: I like the idea of building elevator installations because it is an often overlooked space. Elevators are transitory, mobile spaces where anything can happen.

Three to four 99fridays participants were randomly pulled from the party by a masked performer and instructed to go to a specific floor and call the elevator. Once inside, they were given wine with music pairings.

A kind of alchemy happened in the elevator that brought people together. The shared surprise of discovery when the elevator door opened served as a good ice-breaker for people who didn’t necessarily know each other. By the end of the night, the speakeasy was packed as people spread the word about the hidden wine bar.

*99Fridays is a series of homegrown events at the Media Lab aimed that exploring festival technologies, interactive arts, and ludic spaces.
