artist's statement

[printed inside front cover, bottom]

achtung!

the colour piping on the cover is not random. it was generated automatically by an artificial intelligence art robot called the aesthetiscope, which has read the articles in this volume and generated the cover artwork as an expression of the aesthetic zeitgeist of the volume.

the artbot 'reads' and understands text much in the same way that people do -- it is a rich cognitive process which engages the senses, memory, and knowledge. narratives are first parsed and then interpreted imaginatively through the various perceptual lenses of the rational, cultural, visual, sentimental, and psychic. each interpretation implies colours through literal imagery (countrysides are green hued), cultural metaphor (wealth is green and gold), or colour psychology (off-primary colours evoke more subtlety than primary ones).

hence the final cover artwork should uncover the colour palette that is most profound to all interpretations. regard this as an aesthetic distillation if you will -- a delicious peek into the volume's intratextual unconscious.
