Yosemite Narrative Navigation and Multilinear Narrative
Title: Yosemite Project

Narrative Navigation: Story designs which enable viewers to navigate through a story while maintaining
the fluidity and plot structure of the most compelling linear films.

Multilinear Narrative: Story designs which have multiple linear narratives within an overarching story.
In a multilinear story, linear narratives intersect at many different places.

Research goal: To develop new tools and paradigms possible through technology, that allow media professionals (filmmakers, photographers, print journalists) to tell stories in ways which go beyond the current possibilities of documentary and news feature narratives.

Yosemite: The Fate of Heaven was created as a linear documentary by producer Jon Else. From this work, we created a multilinear narrative, utilizing an interactive narrative navigation which emphasizes strong connections between the visual and aural media and the viewers' personal connections to the story.

Campers Research questions include:
What is the relationship between narrative and navigation?
How can this relationship be developed through the strengths of visual and aural media?
How can each viewer move through a story on an intuituve and visceral level?
In what ways can visual and aural content enhance narrative for a more personal understanding?
What role does interactivity play in our connection to a story?
How can a narrative be interactive and fluid?
How can one mantain a strong plot structure with multilinear narrative?

Having seen a range of "enhanced TV" designs, we
want to create tools and paradigms which draw upon the subtlety, juxtaposition, and fluidity found in most compelling documentary and news feature films.
