The Field Connection

Developed by Seum-Lim Gan, Gili Weinberg and Amy Fienup, the Field Connection is a constructive system for building musical environments using Lego Bricks. Children can use the Lego bricks to create different characters where each and every character is an antenna for an external electric field. When we put one of our hands on the computer monitor, for example, the electric field is passed through our body onto the other hand which we can wave and point above these little characters to make music. The hand on the monitor can control the amount of electric field coming in through the contact area on the screen. The conducting hand can control the amount and also the number of characters to trigger. Together, there are many variations that can be done to play with the characters.

The essence of this is to demonstrate that we do not have to wear a transmitter to play the electric field sensitive blocks. All we need is to make use of another source around which is not doing anything.

The signals from the antenna pick-up are digitized and processed by Max in Macintosh computers and algorithms are used to generate the different music for the characters.
