I am currently a postdoctoral associate at the MIT Media Lab continuing my research work in narrative computing - the quest for computers to understand, generate and mediate stories as creatively, empathetically and intelligently as people do. "Mindful Documentary," my thesis work completed in 2005, introduces a methodology and system for documentary production based on a partnership between the videographer and an intelligent camera. The camera can generate narrative potential of captured video material and give feedback to the videographer by suggesting capture ideas. My research specialties are: design research; digital documentary practice; story understanding in artificial intelligence; and, intelligent tutoring systems for reflective practice. I did my doctoral work in the Media Fabrics group, a dynamic group of researchers who are forging the way to a new expression of digital cinema. I am also a member of Commonsense Computing @ Media, a student initiated group of Media Lab faculty and graduate students who are committed to the herculean task of giving computers commonsense, the kind of intelligence we all use in everyday life. As a postdoc, I became a member of the Neuroengineering and Neuromedia group, which works to invent new tools to understand the brain. My research focuses on how narratives can be customized and used as tools for health, to help people with memory and stress-related disorders. News: In 7/07, I spent the month in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I had the good luck to visit and study three schools, including a village school that is one of the first recipients of the XO Laptop (One Laptop per Child). I also volunteered at The Land, an off-the-grid rice farm/art project co-founded by Rirkrit Tiravanija and shot a still photo documentary of an animal rescue project that takes place at different Buddhist temples around Chiang Mai every Saturday.
